Discussion: The Host

Hi everyone! I thought I'd start our discussion on The Host, although I will admit I have not read it yet. I'm very curious to hear how you all liked it. What was your opinion before you started reading and how did it change through out the story?

My other question is about how it compares to her Twilight series. Obviously, they are two completely different stories and seem to be for different audiences. How does the writing style compare? Which did you prefer? Any similarities?

Okay... now someone else ask some questions who actually READ the book. Sorry, ladies! That is my feeble attempt to get us started. I hope all is well with Ashley, since we haven't heard from her. Ashley - let us know when you are back online.

My first thoughts about the book was that I didn't think I would like it. The blurb about it didn't grab me and make me want to read it like the Twilight series did. I had a hard time getting into it. It wasn't until Wanderer got all almost dead in the desert that I started to get into it. After that I really liked it. I enjoyed all the day to day things they did to survive in the desert and evade detection.
The are 2 different stories but they seem to have the same type of characters that are in Twilight. And she still repeats the obvious emotional blah blah all the time. The writing style is essentially the same, the characters are just older.
I like them both. I would defintely reread The Host.

My questions are: Who was your favorite character and why?

Ian and Jeb. They seemed to be the most normal in their range of emotions which was refreshing after so many people were on one extreme or the other.

Did you ever expect them to get caught? Were you upset that they didn't?

I did expect them to get caught, not just found by the crazy seeker. I knew in the back of my head that they wouldn't really b/c the aliens are so peace loving, but I wanted them too. I need drama I guess. And I guess I am not to upset b/c it does leave it open for more books to follow.

Do you think she will write a sequel?

I think so, she set it up for more stories to follow.

(I had a post I had started a few days ago to get this rolling and never finished, so thanks for getting this going Melissa.)

I really did enjoy this book, and the story was very creative. The reason I didn't love it, was because it never really grabbed me, making me want to keep reading. It also seemed to drag at points and was unnecessarily long. But, hey, like I said before, I did really like the story, especially how it was resolved. And yes, at one point in the story, I even cried.

In answer to the questions:

It was like the Twilight series in that it was a creative and unique story. However, it was also similar in that there was very little description other than rehashing people's feelings over and over.

My favorite characters were Ian - because of how he truly saw Wanda for who and what she was and still loved her, and Wanderer - she struggled with being different from her kind and was very unique.

I didn't want them to get caught, but it seemed likely.

I don't want a sequel, mostly because it seems rather impossible for the humans to ever retake the earth, and so in that respect she could only do more of the same.

And for my question: Did you find it strange that you liked Wanderer more than Melanie? (Assuming that you did.) How did it make you feel to be drawn to the "enemy?"

I liked Wanderer quite a lot, and I was a little bothered by the fact that I was rooting for the "enemy" of humankind. However, as the book progressed, and I liked her more, I grew to look at her as an individual away from the group. It is hard to describe.

Well I am in love with the Twilight Saga. I bought The Host just because it was by Stephenie Meyer. The description was boring, so I researched it online and all the comments I saw about the book just made me want to read it more. So I sat down. The first two pages were extremely boring, but after that, the book grabbed me and pulled me in! I couldn't stop reading! I finished the book before I wanted it over, the ending is so amazing.

The book is in many way different from Twilight but in some way, i found it simular. One: Two people want one person. Two: they live in secret. Three: they all care about the thing that doesn't belong (with a few exceptions).

This book is compelling and you will fall in love with it. It may bring you to tears.
