In the Time of Butterflies - discussion part 1

The three Mirabal sisters who were killed, as pictured on this historical web site.

Okay, I am starting discussion for "In the Time of the Butterflies" a little early. And I think I'm going to spread it out over a couple days, since we still have a few more days of October left. Here are today's discussion questions. Check back tomorrow for more.

1.) First off, did you enjoy the book? What was your favorite part? What was your least favorite part? Who was your favorite sister?

I did enjoy the book.
I think my favorite part was when Minerva ( I think) stood up to Mr. Mean Dictator guy, Truiljio(sp?) at the dance and slapped him. Way to stand up for your morals.
My least favorite part was when Minerva got the buisness card with the 'avoid the pass' warning on it but didn't do anything about it. I know the book is fictionalized history and that might not have really happened, but I didn't like it.
Patria was my favorite sister. She had a faith and values and yet she still had 'natural man' struggles. She also went through a conversion where she doubted and then found her faith again and then acted in a way that she thought she should and was for the betterment of herself and her fellow man. She seemed the most human to me.

I have been sick with a cold the past few days and will comment on the book Friday when I have time to really sit down uninterupted, so can't wait to hear/discuss more

I did enjoy novel, it wasn't one I would have picked myself at all, so I am glad that we ended up with something different and widely unheard of by my standards.

I don't have a favorite part, I enjoyed it all. I needed all of the book to fully understand the whole story. I mean, we knew the sisters were going to be killed...but getting there and having the family secrets told makes the story what it is.

My least favorite part is also Cat's least favorite part. I know they wanted to visit their husbands, but the card was her warning. If that wasn't enough, why not take the busy phone signal when they try to call as a last and final warning.

Patria was my favorite sister, she was the most real to me. I could identify with her and the chapters narrated by her were more interesting to me. I did get a little tired of the diary entries, but understand their importance to the story.
